QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER • SEPTEMBER 2021 A progress report for Tucson Delivers, two voter-approved initiatives, one funded through a ½ cent sales tax and the other through bonds. Three citizen commissions provide oversight and accountability for Tucson Delivers. Increasing Accessibility in Carriage Park Neighborhood Thanks to Safer City/Better Streets funding, accessibility and mobility are increasing in Ward 2's Carriage Park neighborhood. Crews are installing more than 180 ADA-compliant ramps and curbs, many with yellow raised domes or detectable warning systems. Hiawatha Hills/Teresa Terrace & Westgate Townhomes Paving and concrete work is complete Carriage Park Neighborhood Milling and paving starts in September with paving slated to be complete in November prior to Thanksgiving. The Main St./Granada Ave. improvement project begins in October The project limits are Speedway Ave. to Congress St., including the St. Mary's Rd. and Main/Granada intersection. 100% design plans submitted in September for arterial roads package 8: Camino Seco, Pantano Rd, Bear Canyon Rd, Broadway, 22nd St, Melpomene Wy, Sabino Canyon Rd. It's Unanimous: 5.6 Mile Greenway Extension The Tucson Delivers/Strong Connections bond program is funding a $2.28 million extension of the El Paso & Southwestern Greenway. In September 2021, the "Jason Vista Option" was selected as the preferred alternative extension based on intensive public comment, consultant study, Department of Transportation & Mobility staff analysis, review by Ward 5 and the Proposition 407 Parks + Connections Bond Oversight Commission, and, ultimately, approval by Mayor and Council. The 5.6-mile extension will offer a walking and biking path with lighting and a landscaped buffer. Bike Boulevards with a Fall 2021 Construction Start Michigan/Fair, Cherry, Greenway, Bantam, and Alvord Bicycle Boulevard projects will span 7.7 miles and connect to jobs, neighborhood destinations, 9 schools, 10 parks, & 3 greenways. The 3rd Street and Treat Avenue Bicycle Boulevard projects will offer 12.5 miles, connecting to 3 greenways, 14 parks, and 16 schools including UA. Cherry Avenue Park Renovations are underway and will include a new shaded playground, a dog park, a decomposed granite walking path, more trees, irrigation upgrades, and repainted shade structure and perimeter fence. On Saturday August 28, Tucson Fire received a call about an injured mountain biker in the Fantasy Island area near Irvington and Harrison. Using the biker's GPS location from their cell phone, Captain Max Johnson located the injured party on foot approximately four miles off the road. The patient had potentially serious injuries, and the Tucson Fire Department's Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) was dispatched to quickly evacuate the patient from the desert to Medic 12, who further transported the patient to a nearby hospital. Remodel Package 1 For Stations 18, 15, 7 and 16. Focusing on health and safety improvements. Station 18 remodel start is this fall; project construction schedule will be staggered and overlapped so that two stations will be in progress at a given time. A Visionary Southside Public Safety Complex Police substation, Fire Station 10, and Community Space Together A designer and contractor have been tapped to develop a state-of-the-art public safety complex to be located at 4410 S. Park. The complex will include Fire Station 10 and the Santa Cruz Police Substation, plus a large community meeting room, lobby, and restrooms. Both the current Fire Station 10 and police substation are some of the oldest safety facilities in the city. Tentative construction start is June 2022. Financial Reports Safer City/Better Streets Actual Activity as of 8.31.2021 The Safer City/Better Streets initiative is funded by sales tax revenue.  Expenditures focus on capital-intensive projects such as rebuilding and remodeling facilities, adding new technology, and rehabilitation and reconstruction of streets. Great Parks + Strong Connections 2019-2022 Phase 1 Allocation through 8.31.2021 The Great Parks + Strong Connections is a voter-approved initiative funded by bonds. Improvements will occur in three phases over ten years, 2019-2028. The program is currently in the first phase of implementation.
